Toxicology Group Supervisor

The Virginia Department of Forensic Science is seeking qualified applicants to supervise a group of Toxicology staff in the Central Laboratory. The Group Supervisor also assists in the supervision of the day-to-day operations of the section, which includes management of the section backlog and compliance to accreditation standards, state and Department procedures. Trains support and examiner staff. Independently performs comprehensive scientific analyses on a diversity of evidence submitted by law enforcement agencies. Uses state of the art knowledge of methodologies, techniques, and instrumentation related to the analysis of toxicological samples. Interprets analytical results and prepares reports of findings for use by the criminal justice system. Prepares court exhibits and testifies in court as an expert witness.

Qualifications: 

Required qualifications: BA/BS degree in chemistry or a closely related field with sufficient chemistry courses; experience as a Forensic Scientist qualified in analyzing Toxicological samples; experience testifying in court as an expert in the field; successful completion of a documented training program and/or demonstration of competency; ability to work independently, set priorities and work efficiently, keep accurate records, accurately analyze and interpret data, and develop conclusions; ability to communicate effectively in a clear, concise manner, both verbally and in writing; ability to successfully pass a background investigation; valid driver’s license and/or other means of reliable transportation.

Preferred qualifications: Graduate degree; experience in forensic related teaching/training; supervisory experience, to include supervision of technical staff.
