The Toxicology Laboratory Division's (TLD) mission is to provide quality forensic toxicology services and training for our customers within the criminal justice system. The TLD is committed to the highest quality forensic services which ultimately enhances public safety for the citizens of Washington.  Reporting to the TLD Commander, this position provides day-to-day management of a demanding forensic toxicology laboratory, providing services to law enforcement agencies, attorneys and coroners/medical examiners statewide. Responsibilities include ensuring high quality analytical testing, records and evidence management, strategic planning, budget development and equipment/consumable purchases.

The Laboratory Manager will assist in the development and implementation of statewide operational policy and practices; assist in the development and implementation of quality policies unique to the Toxicology Laboratory; assist in the strategic planning process by providing critical program information for the statewide service area; assist in planning and implementing new policies and procedures; and ensure professional development of all staff through documented training.

The Laboratory Manager's role is critical to maintaining laboratory operations and quality through quality assurance programs. The Laboratory Manager needs to ensure accreditation standards (e.g. ABFT; ISO 17025:2005 standards and any supplemental requirements) are understood and met by the scientists and that the scientists demonstrate the level of expertise required to perform all casework.

Qualifications: 

A Bachelor's degree in a natural science, forensic science or closely related field, including 20 semester (or 30 quarter) hours of chemistry, and 5 semester (or 8 quarter) hours of physics coursework.

Minimum of seven years of forensic experience, preferably in an accredited forensic science laboratory performing complex casework and testifying as an expert witness. Three of these years must have been in a supervisory or managerial capacity.

Demonstrate a strong scientific foundation and understanding of forensics. Demonstrate an exceptional standard of personal ethics, integrity, and honesty.

Demonstrate leadership and facilitation in work groups. Craft creative and effective solutions to management and personnel related problems.

Ability to concisely and effectively interact with other individuals as well as internal and external organizations/customers. Demonstrate a productive work ethic and a process improvement approach.

This is demonstrated by reliable attendance, efficient use of time, staying focused, taking initiative, and making efforts to critically evaluate work processes.

Ability and desire to work cooperatively in a team setting. Respect others and act professionally, accept and give constructive criticism appropriately, counsel and advise, and be an active listener.
