The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department Crime Lab is seeking applicants for the position of Latent Fingerprint Examiner. This position is located in Charlotte, NC.
Responsibilities include performing skilled technical work as a qualified Latent Fingerprint Examiner in an ASCLD/LAB accredited laboratory. Work involves a broad range of technical and professional tasks involving the comparison, identification and development of latent fingerprint evidence. Position utilizes advanced development techniques to include forensic, chemical, physical and imaging processes for the visualization, development and recovery of latent print evidence. Position provides expert testimony in State, Superior and Federal Courts; AFIS/IAFIS and digital imaging system operations; prepares analytical reports, charts and court displays; prepares and delivers training programs specific to latent fingerprints as required. Instructions are received from a departmental supervisor and work is reviewed for compliance with departmental policies, CALEA and ASCLD/LAB standards. Work requires the exercise of independent analysis, judgment and initiative and an advanced skill level for the timely completion of work assignments.
Examples of work include:
Evaluate friction ridge detail to determine value for comparative analysis or elimination; Compare latent fingerprints with known standards to determine common source; Development and visualization of latent print evidence from various surfaces and submitted evidence; Process special requests for fingerprints and related information, as requested by departmental employees, prosecutors and defense attorneys; Operation of the Automated Fingerprint Identification Systems (AFIS/ IAFIS); Operation of lab equipment, LIMS systems, computers, cameras and imaging systems/software; Provides expert testimony in court; prepares evidence for court presentation; Respond as required to major crime scenes as a subject matter expert; Performs related work as required by the Unit Supervisor.
