The American Registry of Pathology is seeking a qualified individual for the position of DNA Assistant Technical Leader (Forensic Scientist 4) within the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory (AFDIL) of the DoD DNA Registry, a division of the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System.  This is a contract position.  Salary is commensurate with experience, and includes health benefits and a competitive retirement program.

 Duties and Responsibilities

 Responsible for assisting the technical leader to monitor work product of technical staff whose primary mission is to conduct DNA typing services for the biometrics & battlefield forensic science program.

  • Provides supervision of technical staff.
  • Assigns cases and monitors activities.
  • Performs DNA typing labwork, when necessary.
  • Generates, analyzes, and interprets technical data.
  • Produces and reviews technical reports.
  • Distributes documented scientific findings via secure communications, as appropriate.
  • Participates in a 24/7 rotating on-call schedule.
  • Provides courtroom testimony, when necessary.
  • Provides training in laboratory techniques and procedures.
  • Gives lectures and participates in courses, symposia, workshops, and conferences.
Qualifications: 

A graduate degree in biology, chemistry, or forensic science-related area and a minimum of five (5) years of forensic DNA laboratory experience are required.  In addition, the successful completion of a minimum of twelve (12) college credit hours in biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, as well as statistics and/or population genetics (including, at a minimum, one (1) three-or-more-semester-hour, graduate-level class) is required.  Individuals with supervisory and project management experience, as well as a secret security clearance, are encouraged to apply.  Preference will be given to applicants with greater years of experience. US Citizenship is required.
