DNA Technical Lead Criminalist

Evaluates all methods used by the DNA laboratory and proposes new or modified analytical procedures to be used by DNA examiners;

Solves technical problems related to analytical methods;

Oversees training, quality assurance, safety, and proficiency testing within the DNA Analysis Unit;

Performs the more complex DNA analyses (when requested);

Interprets test results and forms conclusions;

Directs the activities of the DNA Analysis Unit;

Ensures proper and safe operation of the DNA Analysis Unit;

Validates methods used by the DNA Analysis Unit;

Trains DNA laboratory examiners on new analytical techniques;

Testifies in court when necessary.

Qualifications: 

A Masters or other graduate degree from an accredited college or university in biology, chemistry, or a forensic science related area and successful completion of a minimum of 12 semester or equivalent credit hours of combined undergraduate and graduate course work in biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology, and statistics and/or population genetics.

AND

Three years of professional forensic DNA laboratory experience which has included the identification and evaluation of biological evidence in criminal matters. Experience testifying as an expert witness in courts of law is desirable. Posession of a valid California motor vehicle license (as soon as practicable).

Additional Requirements: Applicants must meet the standards for DNA Techncial Leader as established in "The Quality Assurance Standards for Forensic DNA Testing Laboratories", Section 5.2 or have a degree waiver from the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors or other organization designated by the F.B.I. Applicants must be able to pass a background investigation and shall not have been convicted of a felony in any state, or any federal jurisdiction nor of any offense which would have been a felony if committed in California.
