Forensic Lab Latent Print Examiner II

Examines latent prints and their related evidentiary materials. Formulates opinions based upon training and experience, issues reports and testifies to these reports. Receives, examines and returns all evidence in accord with established laboratory procedures. Enters latent prints into AFIS, conducts AFIS searches, reverse searches and verifies fingerprints on DNA data bank cards. Maintains and revises all section manuals in accord with established laboratory procedures. Conducts research in developmental techniques and new procedures. Attends training courses, conferences and seminars. May provide training at Vermont Police Academy, in-service classes and seminars on forensic science and crime scene search matters. Prepares exhibits for court presentation during testimony. Performs related work as required.

Environmental Factors: Work is conducted in a forensic laboratory. Extensive travel may be involved for which a valid Vermont driver's license is required. Exposure to inclement weather may occur. Exposure to unknown chemicals, unsanitary conditions, infectious disease, physical hazards, and noise are present. Incumbents will be required to give testimony before courts.

Qualifications: 

Knowledge of crime scene search techniques and procedures.  Thorough knowledge of forensic laboratory procedures and protocol.  Ability to make and defend decisions.  Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.  Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Education:  Bachelor's degree.

Experience:  Two years experience doing fingerprint analysis.

Note:  Additional experience as specified may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a semester for six months basis.  Must pass department conducted background check.  Must be a qualified latent print examiner with training and experience from a recognized laboratory or police department.
