Forensic DNA Analyst

1. Follow approved procedures, including safety procedures
2. Analyze/interpret data
3. Issue reports or equivalent
4. Casework review, as allowed by training and according to laboratory need
5. Follow established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the established acceptable levels of performance
6. Be able to identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results; when identified, depending on experience, training and authority either correct the problems or notify appropriate personnel
7. Document corrective actions when test systems deviate from established performance specifications
8. Provide court testimony as needed
9. Interact with investigative personnel as needed (forensic casework)
10. Participate in proficiency testing (internal or external) at a level appropriate to the department and the specific responsibilities of the individual, and to the full extent of the individual’s participation in testing
11. Perform proficiency testing in the same manner as samples and maintain records documenting proficiency sample handling
12. Conduct validation studies under the instruction of supervisory personnel
13. Mentor/supervise/assist in training of new employees, as assigned by Technical Leader (forensics) or Technical Supervisor (DNA ID) or designee
14. Implement established Quality Assurance Program and follow established quality procedures
15. Perform other duties as assigned by Technical Leader (forensics) or Technical Supervisor (DNA ID) or designee
16. Participate in continuing education (12 cumulative hours required)

Qualifications: 

1. A minimum of a B.A/B.S degree in biology, chemistry or forensic science related area.
2. Forensic analysts appointed on or after 7/1/09 are required to have a minimum of 9 cumulative credits hours that cover the required subject areas in items 4 and 5.
3. Items 4 and 5 are required for forensics analysts, and recommended (but not required) for medical analysts.
4. Successful completion of course work (graduate or undergraduate level) addressing the following subject areas. If the coursework used to fulfill these requirements have titles other than those listed below, compliance with this standard can be met by providing documentation of course content through materials such as a transcript, syllabus, letter from the instructor, or other materials that support the course content. a. Biochemistry b. Genetics c. Molecular Biology (successful completion of the DNA training program (3-4 graduate credit hours) previously offered by the FBI Laboratory through the University of VA may satisfy the molecular biology course work requirement)
5. Successful completion of coursework OR training in: a. Statistics and/or population genetics (as it applies to forensic DNA analysis).
6. Two (2) years experience in forensic casework as a forensic analyst.
