Section Supervisor - Controlled Substances

Virginia Department of Forensic Science

The Virginia Department of Forensic Science, Northern Regional Laboratory, is seeking a qualified applicant to supervise the Controlled Substances section and its day-to-day operations, to include management of the section backlog and compliance to accreditation standards, state and Department procedures. When necessary, trains support and examiner staff. Independently performs comprehensive scientific analyses on a diversity of evidence submitted by law enforcement agencies. Uses state of the art knowledge of methodologies, techniques, and instrumentation related to the analysis of controlled substances. Interprets results and prepares reports of findings for use by the criminal justice system. Prepares court exhibits and testifies in court as an expert witness.

Required qualifications:  Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or other related science with sufficient chemistry courses (minimally to include general, organic and analytical chemistry). Knowledge of principles and practices of management. Knowledge of basic theoretical principles and applications of the instrumentation and methodologies used to analyze controlled substances (e.g., Color Tests, TLC, GC, GC/MS, FTIR). Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures; quality assurance/quality control and laboratory practices; instrumental analysis and experience in forensic drug analysis required.  Must be able to analyze data, develop sound conclusions, maintain accurate records, and analyze, and solve technical problems. Ability to work independently, set priorities and work efficiently, keep accurate records, accurately perform analyses, interpret data, and develop conclusions; ability to adhere to laboratory safety policies. Ability to communicate effectively in a clear, concise manner, verbally and in writing. Experience defending findings in court. Knowledge of criminal court procedures and rules of evidence; valid driver’s license and/or other means of reliable transportation.

Preferred qualifications: Graduate degree; experience as a drug chemist supervisor; experience in forensic-related teaching/training.
