The Union County Prosecutor’s Office Forensic Laboratory is seeking to fill several temporary DNA Analyst (Forensic Scientist I) positions to perform DNA casework and validation studies for the Laboratory’s Biology/DNA Section. The Union County Prosecutor’s Office Forensic Laboratory is an ASCLD/LAB accredited agency located 25 miles outside of New York City in the town of Westfield, NJ. The Forensic Laboratory supports criminal investigations for over twenty agencies within the County.
The DNA Analyst works under the supervision of the DNA Technical Leader. Responsibilities of the DNA Analyst position include, but are not limited to, the following: successful completion of biological screening/DNA training with demonstrated proficiency prior to assuming casework activities; conducting forensic examinations of various biological samples, including the identification of blood and other body fluids; analysis of a range of forensic casework samples using the Applied Biosystems® real-time quantitation system (ABI 7500) and capillary electrophoresis instruments (ABI 3130) to support STR-based amplification methods; preparation of technical reports of scientific findings and submission of results to Combined DNA Index System (CODIS); communication with police investigators and prosecutors to explain testing procedures, results, and conclusions; adherence to ASCLD/LAB and the FBI’s Quality Assurance Standards for Forensic Testing Laboratories; instructing investigators on evidence collection methods and the proper handling of evidence; assisting the DNA Technical Leader to implement validated protocols and procedures; providing expert witness testimony in courts of law.
The Office anticipates these positions will be available in Fall 2012; funding is expected through 2014 or beyond. Salary is commensurate with previous experience. Successful employment is contingent upon passing a background investigation.
