PHYSICIAN DIRECTOR/ CHIEF MEDICAL EXAMINER

West Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner

The Bureau for Public Health within the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources seeks a professional for the following position:  Physician Director.

Under the general supervision of the Commissioner, Bureau for Public Health, this position will oversee the operation of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME).  This position is responsible for overseeing the statewide operation of the medical examiner system, which investigates deaths pursuant to WV State Code, §61-12-8.  Associated duties include selection and supervision of forensic pathologists, toxicologists, laboratory technicians, medicolegal investigators, and other support staff; and training, selection, appointment and supervision of West Virginia County Medical Examiners.  This position is responsible for conducting medicolegal investigations and determining cause and manner of deaths that fall under State Code Article 12 and providing expert testimony regarding such findings when required at judicial proceedings.  The position provides oversight of forensic pathology and toxicology, and other clinical and forensic activities conducted at the OCME.  Supervises all activities of the Child Fatality Review Team and the Domestic Violence Fatality Review Team.  Advises agencies and other entities that have association with the state medical examiner system, including police agencies, federal, state and local prosecutors, medical schools, and physicians on the proper conduct of medicolegal death investigations, and associated activities which increase public safety.
