Provides operational and technical supervision to the Drug Testing Lab
section at TVMDL to detect drugs and residues in animal tissues and
excretions/secretions, as well as in contraband products and
environmental samples. Uses independent judgment and discretion to
address routine administrative matters. Provides select staff recruitment,
selection, evaluation, and development. Confirms accuracy of results.
Interprets and communicates test results with clientele. Provides written
reports and statistical data on laboratory findings. Ensures maintenance
of equipment in the Drug Testing Lab. Advises supervisor regarding
capabilities of testing procedures.
Responsible for quality assurance and safety programs in the drug testing
laboratory. Serves as an advocate for agency quality assurance and
safety policies and procedures at TVMDL and ensures compliance of the
Drug Testing Lab. Writes, reviews, and approves SOPs. Ensures quality
control monitoring of laboratory processes and equipment. Analyzes (or
supervises) and records results for relevant proficiency samples. Attends
and participates in Quality Assurance and Safety Committee meetings,
serving as a representative of the Drug Testing Lab. Communicates
relevant meeting proceedings with all section staff after each meeting.
Represents TVMDL and the Drug Testing Lab at assigned meetings and
conferences. Initiates developmental work to improve existing drug
detection methods or develop, implement, and validate new methods or
technologies. Advises supervisory chain on new tools that will advance
drug testing. Interfaces with TVMDL clientele and industry partners to
determine drug testing needs and deliver expertise in drug testing
services. Interacts with inter-agency co-workers and extra-agency peers
to complete assigned projects and tasks.
Prepares and oversees preparation of legal documents for administrative
and judicial hearings regarding the finding of illegal drugs.
Required:
MS in chemistry, pharmacology, toxicology, or similar field.
Three years experience in analytical chemistry.
Excellent communication skills. Ability to multi-task and work
cooperatively with others, provide leadership and accomplish tasks with
minimal supervision.
Positions is security-sensitive. Applicants are subject to a criminal
history investigation.
Preferred:
PhD in chemistry, pharmacology, toxicology, or similar field.
Five years experience in analytical chemistry. Two years experience in
racing chemistry. Experience supervising personnel. Demonstrated
successful interactions, relationships and collaborative efforts with
stakeholders. Knowledge of racing industries.
