Forensic Biology Section Supervisor

Virginia Department of Forensic Science

The Virginia Department of Forensic Science, Western Laboratory, is seeking a qualified applicant to supervise the Forensic Biology section and to perform forensic examinations, including identification of blood and other body fluids, DNA PCR-based STR fluorescence imaging analysis and comparisons of genetic material on criminal evidence using state-of-the-art analytical methodologies, techniques, and instrumentation.  Prepares reports of findings for use by the criminal justice system and testifies in court as an expert witness. Communicates with medical and legal officials on testing procedures, results, and conclusions. Instructs law enforcement officials on the handling of evidence. Requires some travel.

Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or closely related scientific field; college courses (graduate or undergraduate level) consisting of 9 or more cumulative semester or equivalent hours in genetics, biochemistry, and molecular biology (molecular genetics or recombinant DNA technology), as well as course work and/or training in statistics and population genetics as applied to forensic DNA analysis; significant forensic casework experience; experience with STR analysis using capillary electrophoresis; completion of a documented training program in forensic DNA analysis and the forensic identification of biological substances; courtroom testimony as an expert witness; ability to communicate effectively in a clear, concise manner, both verbally and in writing, and defend scientific findings in court; knowledge of criminal court procedures and rules of evidence. Selected candidate must be eligible to possess a valid driver’s license or have other means of reliable transportation.

Preferred Qualifications: Advanced degree; experience with STR analysis using the FMBIO platform; experience using robotics in forensic casework; forensic related teaching/training experience; experience supervising technical staff.
