Major Job Responsibilities

  • Oversees the daily operations and supervision of staff of the Toxicology Unit.
  • Responsible for the unit's budget, fiscal and statistical reports.
  • Ensures laboratory accreditation, policies and procedures for the unit.
  • Acts as designated Technical Leader for the unit. 
  • Assigns casework to staff.
  • Analyzes biological samples such as blood, urine and tissue to identify the presence of alcohol, drugs, and/or toxic agents, using a variety of sensitive, analytical laboratory equipment applying standardized procedures.
  • Assures that equipment is maintained and calibrated assuring the integrity of data.
  • Manages the validation, maintenance and troubleshooting of toxicology instrumentation and related equipment.
  • Manages the quality control measures to assure chain of custody and specimen storage procedures comply with written standards.
  • Assists with writing and managing grant funds and vendor contracts of the unit.
  • Oversees the unit's process manuals and authorizes conformance and use.
  • Communicates with criminal and defense attorneys and other members of the judicial system.
  • Testifies in criminal court as an expert witness, as required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to be able to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Employees may work with chemicals or biological materials that are irritating, hazardous, or toxic.

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's Degree in a Natural Science with 24 or more hours of college course work in Chemistry, five (5) years of professional experience in forensic toxicology casework including experience in ASCLD-LAB accredited laboratory using SOFT practices and two (2) years of supervisory experience.  Valid "Class D" driver's license.

Preferred Knowledge/Abilities/Experience:

  • Knowledge of forensic science laboratory practices and products.
  • Experience in the methods and procedures in forensic science.
  • Experience working with gas chromatography and mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography.
  • Experience working in organic and inorganic chemistry, including qualitative and quantitative analysis as applied to toxicological, pharmacological and physiological aspects of drugs and alcohol.
  • Experience in crime scene evidence collection and knowledge of evidence preservation methods.
  • Knowledge of and experience using related laboratory instrumentation, computer software, calibration, validation, quality control, safety, accreditation, proficiency testing and training.
  • Skill in data analysis, problem solving and timely resolution of problems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
