Criminalist Specialist - SEROLOGIST

Houston Police Department Crime Lab

Analyzes biological evidence, keeps precise records, develops accurate conclusions, and generates reports according to established procedures. Mentors Criminalists in the section as assigned. Includes assisting them in completing departmental paperwork such as time sheets and travel forms, monitoring vacation requests and overtime requests, and assisting with formal training in the section. Keeps supervisor apprised of details regarding the criminalists assigned to them. Performs technical and administrative reviews on biology cases, keeps precise records, develops accurate conclusions, and assists in the generation of reports according to established procedures. Provides technical assistance to section members, police officers, assistant district attorneys, other law enforcement agencies and civic groups. Testifies in court regarding the scientific conclusions obtained from the analysis of evidence. Monitors testimony of Criminalists in the laboratory and fills out appropriate paperwork.

MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a thorough understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of an analytical, technical or professional discipline. Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Criminalistics, Biology, Physics or a closely related field and coursework in molecular biology, biochemistry and genetics.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Three years of experience in a forensic laboratory as a criminalist are required.
