•    one permanent and one temporary (up to 12 months)

Join the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, Centre of Forensic Sciences, Biology Section to provide leadership to scientific and technical staff engaged in forensic investigation and analysis.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:
•    manage unit staff
•    coordinate the completion of casework of the unit including case assignment, providing expert advice and direction and ensuring continuity of evidence and coordination of the unit's work
•    monitor laboratory practices to ensure staff compliance with accreditation standards and safety procedures
•    identify needs and conduct and promote educational training and developmental programs for staff
•    participate in research and development activities/programs
•    establish and oversee a regular program for the preventative maintenance of scientific equipment and monitor work of scientists and technologists
•    conduct casework and testify in court on reports and analyses conducted within the Biology Section

Location: 25 Grosvenor Street, Toronto, Ontario

Note: these positions will be relocated to the new state-of-the-art facility at Provincial Downsview Complex located at 1201 Wilson Avenue, Toronto in 2013

How do I qualify?

Technical Knowledge:

You have:

•    advanced knowledge in forensic chemistry, biology, or toxicology obtained in part through successful completion of an Honours B.Sc. in an appropriate natural or applied science together and/or extensive forensic science experience
•    knowledge of international standards of accreditation and procedures used in other forensic science laboratories and quality assurance programs
•    knowledge of forensic biology to conduct, oversee, assign and monitor the work of the team
•    knowledge of technologies and methodologies both current and emerging, which impact forensic science
•    experience in program management in order to plan, implement and evaluate programs of scientific investigation and research

Leadership and Management Skills:
•    you can lead a professional team to meet the organizational vision and objectives
•    you can manage staff, which includes recruitment, performance management and labour relations
•    you have the ability to acquire and apply knowledge of human resources principles and practices related to staffing, performance and attendance management and labour relations
•    you can evaluate case work and research projects
•    you can review case files and scientific reports and discuss cases with clients
•    you have the ability to assist court officials and investigative and medical personnel to develop a knowledgeable awareness of forensic science methodologies and procedures through conducting lectures, providing advice on the case work, testing procedures, limitations of test results, etc.

Excellent Communication (Oral and Written) and Interpersonal Skills:
•    you can effectively communicate complex technical information to provide clear instructions and/or present lectures and training courses to a diverse audience (e.g. scientific and technical staff, professionals, stakeholders and partners)
•    you have the ability to provide expert testimony in court

Note: The successful candidate will be required to undergo a satisfactory criminal reference check prior to the commencement of employment.

Salary range: $74,016.00 – $95,724.00 per year
