The Office of Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine invites applications for a one-year fellowship, seeking innovative work in the following area: Laboratory Science “Smart Swabbing” Research and Development – The Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI), a section within the Attorney General’s Office, houses the state of Ohio’s official crime lab and serves the criminal justice community. This will be a one-year, full-time position beginning as early as July 1, 2013 or alternatively January 1, 2014. The BCI Laboratory seeks an experienced forensic scientist or chemist to work collaboratively to conduct research and development in the scientific discipline of automated DNA extraction. The fellow will assist in the development of detergent-based “smart swab” techniques to improve the recovery of touch DNA and ultimately enhance the forensic laboratory services offered by BCI. The fellow will also be expected to characterize the suitability of various swab materials for DNA collection and DNA yield from firearms and latent print substances.

In addition, selected candidates must successfully complete the following background checks: criminal history, driving record, taxes, verification of academic credentials, and drug screen. The candidate selected may also be subjected to a polygraph examination and field investigation.
