PURPOSE: To move evidence submissions received among multiple technical specialty units within a laboratory and other facilities. To assist in reviewing and evaluating incoming evidence submissions to help determine the nature and extent of examination requests and assist in assigning specific scientific disciplines to conduct necessary analyses. To provide routine support and may receive training in explosives handling, reconstruction, and testing. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: · Receives, inventories, maintains chain-of-custody, prepares detailed paperwork pertaining to evidence and submitted items. May photograph evidence. Assists in reviewing and evaluating incoming evidence submissions to determine the nature and extent of examination requests and to help assign specific scientific disciplines to conduct necessary analyses. · Ensures each piece of evidence is accounted for, tracked, and transferred among various technical specialties as required to facilitate examinations. · Receives training in the proper classification and identification of evidence to meet the standards of a forensic laboratory and the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) community. Receives training regarding evidence processing procedures and understanding of the complexities and difficulties that may be encountered during the processing and analysis of the evidence. OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS: · May handle dangerous materials, such as explosives. May operate tools and heavy equipment after receiving appropriate training. Provides routine support and receives training as necessary to assist in research studies, explosives reconstruction, testing, and/or related projects. Respond to inquiries pertaining to examinations. Receives training in forensic techniques and evidence handling procedures to become oriented to the laboratory environment and protocols.
