MSP Forensic Scientist III

Maryland State Police - Forensic Sciences Division

 

The main purpose of this position is the microscopic, chemical and functional examination of firearms and firearms related evidence. This will assist in the examiner determining if a bullet, cartridge case or other ammunition component was fired from a particular firearm. The position will also involve shot pattern testing, toolmark examinations, NIBIN database entry and court testimony. 

Education: A Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, genetics, medical technology, pharmaceutical science, criminal justice or related physical, natural or forensic science from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Three years of experience in comparative analysis or scientific evaluation of evidence including experience in providing testimony as an expert witness in moot or criminal court.

Notes: 1. Additional experience performing comparative analysis or scientific evaluation of evidence to include experience in providing expert testimony may be substituted on a year for year basis for the required education.

2. Possession of a Master’s degree in the above physical, natural or forensic sciences from an accredited college or university may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

3. Possession of a doctorate in the above physical, natural or forensic sciences from an accredited college or university may be substituted for two years of the required experience.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Experience - At least two of the three years of experience must have been as a Firearms/Toolmark Examiner Expert (FTEE) as recognized by the Association of Firearms and Toolmark Examiners (AFTE).  In addition, experience must have included testimony as a FTEE in a court of law.
