Police Identification Technician I/II

Positions in the Police Identification Technician series collection, photograph, identify, process, and preserve physical evidence related to accidents and criminal investigations. They perform tests on weapons and substances (i.e., fiber, hair, tissue, bodily fluids, drugs, etc.) to determine significance to the investigations. They prepare technical logs, diagrams, and reports for documentation. They may serve as expert witnesses in court proceedings.

Positions in this series are flexibly staffed and incumbents may advance from Level I to Level II at the discretion of the appointing authority and when the incumbent meets the miminum qualifications.

Level I salary range: $3,761 - $4,571 per month

Level II salary range: $4,151 - $5,046 per month

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Police Identification Technician I: This is the entry/trainee level within the series. Positions at this level typically have little directly related work experience and/or perform less than the full range of duties assigned to the Level II. Incumbents work under immediate supervision as procedures and processes of an assigned area of responsibility are learned.

Police Identification Technician II: This is the journey level class in the series. Incumbents perform the full range of duties and fully understand the operating procedures and policies within the work unit. They work under general supervision; only receiving occasional instruction as new, unusual, or unique situations arise.

Level I Experience and Training Guidelines

Experience:

One year of progressively responsible experience with a law enforcement agency in fingerprint collection and development, latent fingerprint analysis, and processing/analyzing major crime scenes desirable.

Training:

Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university with course work in criminology, forensic science, life sciences or a related field; (Note: Two years of progressively responsible experience with a law enforcement agency in fingerprint collection and development, latent fingerprint analysis, and processing/analyzing major crime scenes may substitute for two years of required education.)

Level II Experience and Training Guidelines

Experience:

Eighteen months of responsible experience equivalent to Police Identification Technician I with the City of Modesto.

Training:

Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university with course work in criminology, forensic science, life sciences or a related field; (Note: Two years of progressively responsible experience with a law enforcement agency in fingerprint collection and development, latent fingerprint analysis, and processing/analyzing major crime scenes may substitute for two years of required education.)

A minimum of 300 hours of specialized POST-recognized (or the equivalent) training related to the detection, collection and preservation of crime scene evidence. Courses must include, but are not limited to: advanced training in fingerprint collection and identification; digital imaging technology; chemical processing; photography; collection of physical evidence at crime scenes; and courtroom presentation of evidence.

Levels I and II License or Certificate:

Possession of a valid California Driver's License at the time of appointment.
