Supervisor III (Crime Scene Supervisor)

Kansas City Missouri Police Department

1. Supervises and trains section personnel, which includes handling personnel issues, internal grievances, and complaints from citizens and/or field officers.

2. Directs and provides supervision to Crime Scene Technicians and other Criminalistics Unit personnel at crime scenes and coordinates activities with detectives and other personnel at crime scenes. Ensures crime scene victims, suspects, vehicles, etc. are searched for evidence in accordance with national accreditation and complicance protocols.

3. Ensures crime scenes are processed, appropriate levels of protection against contagious diseases are maintained, evidence is collected and secured, and reports are written in accordance with established policies and procedures.

4. Directs training of technicians; searched for new methods and ideas for improving section performance. Complies with and monitors crime scene certification requirements, in accordance with the International Association for Identification (IAI).

5. Conducts monthly inspections of personnel, vehicles, and equipment; monitors technical aspects of personnel performance by conducting on-scene inspections.

6. Performs related duties as required.

Must possess a Bachelor's degree in a physical/natural science or a high school diploma and equivalent experience to perform the essential job functions. Must have at least three (3) years of related forensic investigative experience or advanced education and law enforcement experience. Incumbent must earn a Level III International Association of Identification certification within 1 year of employment. Testing will include a polygraph examination, TABE, drug testing, and MMPI. Succesful completion of Crime Scene Investigation School is required. Incumbent must have full use of all limbs and possess a valid driver's license. The position requires very heavy lifting (over 50 pounds) occasionally, heavy lifting (25-50 pounds) often, and light (5 to 20 pounds) lifting frequently. The position also requires knowledge of police communications equipment.

Job Location (Place where work is performed)

Position operates at both indoor and outdoor crime scenes in all weather conditions with time in a crime laboratory and a standard office environment. Job involves exposure to hazardous materials and working conditions as well as exposure to body fluids and communicable diseases.
