Year 2000 Time Capsule
by Amy Price, YFSF Special Projects

The Young Forensic Scientists Forum Time Capsule Project was an idea originated by Distinguished Fellow Ken Field at the 1999 Annual Meeting. With the approach of the millennium, it seems appropriate to reflect on the past, consider the present and to anticipate the future of AAFS and the entire forensic science profession. The YFSF Special Projects Committee has accepted the challenge to create a time capsule to be sealed at a ceremony at the 2000 AAFS Annual Meeting in Reno, Nevada. The capsule will be stored at the AAFS office in Colorado Springs until it is opened at the 100th year celebration of the AAFS in 2048. Through this time capsule, the YFSF hopes to preserve the history of significant individuals and accomplishments in forensic science, document the state of forensic science at the turn of the century, and chronicle what the future may hold for the next generation of forensic scientists. To accomplish these goals, the Special Projects Committee sent letters to several members of AAFS requesting suggestions as well as historical and contemporary memorabilia. Thoughts and ideas on the future and any items exemplifying important aspects of forensic science were also requested. To date, response to these requests has been limited although the ideas and suggestions presented have been very helpful. The main interest has been concentrated in documenting the history and current status of AAFS, the forensic profession, and daily life at the brink of the millennium. Examples of a few suggestions include a copy of the Journal of Forensic Sciences, a newsletter, meeting programs, examples of casework reports, pictures of contemporary forensic science facilities, as well as a TV Guide, a book of stamps, a model of a modern car, and current newspapers and magazines. More suggestions and ideas are still needed. The committee would like to collect reflections on the past, predictions for the future, and items to be included in the capsule. The primary focus of the Special Projects Committee leading up to the meeting is to organize and properly store artifacts collected. We would like to include suggestions and ideas from as many disciplines and forensic science professionals as possible. Your contributions to the AAFS Time Capsule Project are welcomed and encouraged. Questions, suggestions, and items can be sent to the YFSF chair: Patricia A.
