YFSF in Seattle -- 4th Annual Special Session

The YFSF has done it again! For the fourth consecutive year, the Young Forensic Scientists Forum has organized a Special Session entitled, Building a Career in Forensic Science — Education, Employment and Expert Testimony. Although the content of the session is similar to programs presented in the past, the YFSF continues to try to incorporate new ideas and suggestions into the program's format while continuing to offer the most important information on education and career topics to a new group of young forensic scientists.

The daylong special session will be broken up into morning and afternoon sessions. In the morning, we are honored to have AAFS President John McDowell speaking on the ethical challenges facing every new forensic scientist in the 21st Century. In addition, Graham Jones will discuss the increasing role of certification and accreditation in forensic science. Jay Siegel (joining in for the fourth year in a row!) will again discuss important aspects of interview skills and resume writing. Additionally, the morning session will feature a career spotlight with a presentation by Joseph Saady who will talk about his career in the field of toxicology.

The afternoon session will begin with Robert Jarzen presenting his thoughts on the expectations for forensic scientists entering the job market and postgraduate academic programs. Turhon Murad will then discuss a topic on every young forensic scientist's mind — the value of internships and tips on how to find one. The final session of the afternoon will emphasize the role of the forensic scientist as an expert witness. Charles Dold will give a presentation detailing the responsibilities of the expert witness and demonstrating techniques for effective testimony. The importance of this topic for the young forensic scientist and the positive reviews of past years have made this discussion a must for the YFSF Special Session. The session will conclude with the legendary testimony demonstration. This year, Robert Jarzen will take the hot seat to be questioned by Kenneth Melson and Charles Dold

The YFSF is looking forward to an exciting and thought provoking day. All interested young or new forensic scientists will want to participate in this informative session on career development.
