Mentor Program Update
by Ken Williams, MS

For over three years now, the Young Forensic Scientists have maintained a Mentor Program through the AAFS. The program was designed to match members of the Academy with other more experienced members in order to provide guidance in forensic science matters. This is accomplished by way of a Mentor Application form located on the YFSF page as a link. Those interested in either serving as a mentor or being mentored are able to complete the form online. Once completed, the form is submitted directly to the Mentor Program Chairman. Thus far, much to the dismay of the organizers, the program has been used primarily as an outlet for Junior and Senior High Students requesting help with school projects. This is not the purpose for which the program was created.

All requests are screened and only requests originated by members of the Academy in good standing are kept. Over the past couple of months, more and more forms have been submitted from members with a true desire to be mentored. Unfortunately, due to the stagnancy of the program the past few years, we have a case in which supply does not meet the demand. In order to accommodate the requests of the members, we must at this time make a plea to the experienced members of the Academy who are able to answer the occasional question via email and lend guidance to the up and coming forensic scientists.

AAFS members from all sections and regions are desired. This would enable more specific placement of mentorees based on areas of interest and geographic location. For more information regarding the program, visit the YFSF website or contact Ken Williams directly at lppwillc@gw.njsp.org . If you visit the website, be sure to click the box for mentor. By reading this article and being a member of the Academy, it is obvious that you have the best interest of the field in mind. Please consider being a part of the program because it is an excellent opportunity to ensure the future of the forensic sciences by reaching back to help those who desire to follow along your path.
