Young Forensic Scientists Forum Newsletter - March/April 2002 YFSF Bring Your Own Slides |
| The third annual BYOS held in Atlanta had a total attendance of about 125! This year we had seven presenters, one less than the scheduled presenters in Seattle 2001.
Claire Sheperd, crime scene investigator, Co-Chair for the YFSF Special Session, and an Atlanta representative, began the evening with a presentation of cases from DeKalb County depicting one case in particular which proved that things are not always as they appear to be. The next group of presenters hailed all the way from the University of New Haven in Connecticut. Joanne Liu and Michele Irwin, Erica Blais and Nataisha Perez, and Allison Curran presented cases that they worked on for their Senior Seminar class with the renowned Professor Marilyn Miller. What is most impressive is that these are undergraduate students presenting crime scene reconstructions on real cases. They did an excellent job, especially when fielding questions from the audience. Amy Price, Co-Chair for the YFSF Special Session, and her colleague, Nicole Harold, presented unusual DNA cases from the Virginia Division of Forensic Sciences. These cases involved a rubber duckie, an obsession with Shania Twain, and twine! Finally, the BYOS session ended with a tribute to the World Trade Center. A montage of photographs and video clips set to music was compiled by Brian Gestring, forensic biologist for the New York City OCME and survivor of the attacks on the World Trade Center. Some of the photographs in the slide show were taken by Brian on his way down to the World Trade Center. He was hit by debris and knocked unconscious as he ran from the collapsing tower. Miraculously, he survived and somehow ended up in New Jersey. Since Brian was unable to attend the YFSF BYOS session, Bianca Nazzaruolo from the New York City OCME and Sheila Estacio presented it on his behalf. If you are interested in getting in contact with any of the presenters or would like to sign up early for next year's BYOS, e-mail Sheila Estacio at sheila_estacio@yahoo.com. Thanks to all the presenters for a successful session in Atlanta! See you in the Windy City in 2003! |
