Young Forensic Scientists Forum Newsletter - May/June 2001 2001
YFSF BYOS Recap |
| It is nice to set goals. It is even better to reach those goals. The YFSF made it a goal to double the number of presenters at last year's first YFSF Bring Your Own Slides session. With a grand total of three presenters in Reno, it should not have been too difficult to get six for Seattle, even if begging and pleading became necessary. Fortunately, it did not come to that. The YFSF's goal of six was met and surpassed, with a couple to spare. The forum was pleased to provide a stage for eight presenters to highlight noteworthy cases with topics as varied as the presenters themselves. The topics of this year's session ranged from the use of scotch tape as physical evidence to uncover a mail room theft to the finding of skeletal remains at a ritualistic burial site in New York. Such a wide range of presentations made it possible to touch many of the different facets of the field of forensic science, which in turn helps the YFSF in its efforts to expose the forum participants to as many of the facets as possible. The YFSF aims to provide a setting for young forensic scientists to present their forensic involvement without feeling intimidated. It should also be known that forensic involvement is not limited to actual casework. A group of students from the University of New Haven shared a power point presentation of a crime scene reconstruction completed as part of a classroom assignment. The professor, feeling the students did a nice job with the assignment, urged them to sign up. Not only was it a great experience for the students, but a treat for the audience as well. That is the very essence of the YFSF. The YFSF is essentially a forum of beginners or those new to the field. Chances are if it is interesting and new to you, it will be the same to the majority of the attendees. If you have worked on a project that you would like to share or a case that you find especially interesting, please take part in the next BYOS. It is now the time to start collecting those interesting photographs and tales to share with your peers. The YFSF will not make it a goal to double the number of presenters for the next BYOS, because sixteen would be a rather difficult number to reach at this stage. However, there is no reason there can’t be just as many presenters or more! More is not always better, but in the case of the YFSF, "the more the merrier." Please look in future issues of the newsletter for sign-up information. We hope to hear of your tales and cases in Atlanta. And by the way, we only laugh if we are supposed to do so! |
