AAFS Annual Meeting in the Good Ole South |
| It is hard to believe it is already time to start planning for the 2002 AAFS Annual Meeting in Atlanta. It seems like only a few months ago that we were wondering if Seattle would live up to its rainy reputation, and breathing a sigh of relief that the earthquake jolted the city the week after we had all settled back into work or school. Since I live in Atlanta I have been looking forward to the 2002 meeting for over a year. This year we will not have to worry about earthquakes; it probably will not rain since we are in the middle of a two year drought; and I cannot wait to take my Yankee friends to eat fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, and grits. Even though February seems like a long time from now, the Atlanta meeting is quickly approaching. It is time to start making those plane reservations, and in order to provide you with the best academic session possible, the YFSF committee has been planning the session since March. For everyone that has attended the YFSF academic session in the past, and for those of you who will be attending for the first time, we have a new and exciting special session planned. This year we are attempting to reach a larger audience by providing relevant information for both students and young professionals in the field of forensic science. As many members of the YFSF made the transition from student to employee, we felt there was not enough information for young professionals that had achieved the goal of gaining employment. We hope to reach a larger audience through the speakers we have chosen, who are familiar with students and young professionals, and therefore are able to present topics that are beneficial to both groups of people. Additionally, for the first time, young professionals will be presenting at the forum in an attempt to make the speakers more approachable, easier to identify with, and to give young scientists an opportunity to gain experience in front of their peers. Therefore, the 2002 Program, entitled "Establishing a Foundation for a Successful Career in Forensic Science," will have many different topics that will be beneficial to students as well as young professionals. We have secured some of the best speakers currently in the field, and back by popular demand, we will have young scientists sharing their stories regarding their journey from student, to employee, to AAFS meeting presenter. We think it will be great session and we encourage you all to attend. Not only do we have a great program planned, you will be able to approach many members of the forensic science community in a friendly setting, and you are guaranteed to learn something, even if it is just me telling you where to go eat in Atlanta. So get those stomachs ready for fried food, BBQ, grits, and be sure and mark your AAFS meeting registration form next to the YFSF box. See you in Atlanta! |
