American Academy of Forensic SciencesYoung Forensic Scientists Forum

BYOS - September 2002

by Amy Price, BS, YFSF Secretary

Have you ever wanted to present at an Academy meeting a case study, some funky stuff you observed during an internship, or a weird case you had during the year but were just too intimidated to get a poster together or present a paper?

The Young Forensic Scientists Forum (YFSF) would like to invite individuals to the Third Annual YFSF Bring Your Own Slides! The original Bring Your Own Slides presentations began in a hotel room at the AAFS Annual Meeting where scientists would bring slides from some of their more unusual cases. Now BYOS has become a huge annual event, and the YFSF would like to continue its own tradition.

This is your opportunity to share with your colleagues some fun cases and information that you've come across in your career. This includes cases you may have done while in school or on internships. Anything goes!

The guidelines are similar to those for the Academy-wide BYOS:

• BYOS is not intended as a forum to present scientific papers; just the interesting, the fun, and/or the unusual, please!

• Speakers should plan on having about 10 minutes of material.

• Tables, charts, and graphs should be avoided...we'd all like to see the fun stuff!

• Please sign-up in advance at the e-mail addresses and/or phone number to follow.

• Walk-ins will be welcome! If you don't get a chance to sign up before you leave for Chicago (and we HIGHLY recommend that you do); we'll do our best to fit you in. We have to limit the evening to no more than 1 1/2 hours.

• We can accommodate any media form (35 mm slides and overheads) but prefer to use PowerPoint. We will have a computer and projector available.

This is a great resume builder because it shows you have the confidence to make a presentation at an Academy meeting, but this forum is relaxed enough that you don't really need to sweat it! We're looking forward to a fun evening, and you can be a part of it. Look back through your work, and keep your eyes peeled during the next few months as well. See you in Chicago!

To sign up, please contact: Megan Leggett at Leggett_M@msn.com, or Amy Price at (540) 561-6600 or aprice@dfs.state.va.us.
