New Organization for the Young Forensic Scientists Forum
by Patricia Manzolillo, MSFS, YFSF Chairperson

The success of the first four years of the Young Forensic Scientists Forum (YFSF) is a direct result of the dedication and commitment of many people throughout the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS). The YFSF is now an organization that can make a significant contribution to the membership of the AAFS (young, old and in-between!).

During the past four years the structure of the YFSF has been organized through a voluntary and appointment based system, although the formal development of criteria for membership, bylaws and a defined organizational structure has often been discussed.

Due to the significant accomplishments of the YFSF over the past years, it is time to formalize the organizational structure of the YFSF. This will be a major focus of the current YFSF steering committee over the next few months.

The current YFSF membership (people who have attended YFSF meetings/ sessions) includes Students, Trainee Affiliates and Provisional Members of all sections of the AAFS. AAFS Members and Fellows have served as mentors, guides and liaisons for the YFSF. Committees have been developed to accomplish specific projects as needed.

The aim of the YFSF has been to provide a forum and a resource for forensic scientists not yet established in their careers. Therefore, the membership requirements and bylaws should reflect this aim. The YFSF members currently working on this project would encourage any ideas, suggestions, personal experiences, etc., that would help the YFSF to develop these criteria and bylaws. The formalization of the YFSF organizational structure and membership criteria will ensure the continuation of the YFSF as a valuable resource of the AAFS.
