Assistant Forensic Quality Assurance Manager

  • Critically evaluates risk and opportunities for improvement and maintains compliance with ISO standards for accreditation; performs audits and reports to ensure compliance with all applicable codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures; responds to requests; assists in the development of any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations and ensures corrective actions are implemented; responsible for document control processes. Assures continuous improvement in the quality of the Crime Laboratory work product.
  • Assists with maintaining the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and Qualtrax Compliance Software; acts as system and database administrator; installs hardware/software; trains staff; creates and runs reports; oversees and ensures data and documentation integrity.
  • Assist in the management of the Proficiency Testing Program; administers and coordinates proficiency testing; reviews test results; coordinates court testimony review.
  • Assists with the development and execution of policies and procedures pertaining to Crime Laboratory activities, services, and training of staff.
  • Assists in conducting and coordinating internal audits to include accreditation standards, training, safety, and quality assurance/quality control programs.
  • Coordinates and may conduct laboratory-related training for staff to include safety issues and other quality assurance/quality control concerns.
  • Coordinates bio-hazardous and chemical waste disposition.
  • Prepares, reviews, and/or assesses quality control requirements for analytical equipment.
  • Communicates with supervisor, employees, attorneys, contractors, vendors, outside agencies, the public, and other individuals as needed to review the status of work, exchange information, resolve problems and/or give/receive advice/direction; serves on committees; attends meetings; completes special projects as requested.
  • Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws/regulations; maintains an awareness of new trends and advances in the profession; maintains professional certifications and/or affiliations; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.
  • The Assistant Forensic Quality Assurance Manager must stay abreast of developments within Forensic Science by reading current scientific literature.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Forensic Science or closely related area.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of casework experience obtained at a laboratory where testing was conducted on evidence in criminal matters. Experience includes independent casework analysis and providing expert witness testimony in court.
  • Must currently hold, or obtain within one year of employment, and maintain certification in a forensic discipline.
  • Must obtain Qualified Technical Assessor and FBI DNA QA Guidelines Auditing Certificate within one year of employment.

Preferred Experience:

  • Prior experience in quality assurance management and expert knowledge of the Justice Trax LIMS-plus and Qualtrax applications.

Special Requirements:

  • Must possess, or be able to obtain and maintain, a valid Florida driver's license.
  • Must obtain Qualified Technical Assessor and FBI DNA QA Guidelines Auditing Certificate within one year of employment.

Physical Ability:

  • Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds) and occasionally may involve stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling and lifting of heavier items (up to 20 pounds).
  • Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station.

Sensory Requirements:

  • Some tasks require the ability to perceive and differentiate colors or shades of colors, sound, odor, and visual cues or signals.
  • Tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors:

  • Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as odors, fumes, temperature extremes, machinery, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, disease, pathogenic substances, repetitive wrist motion, or bright/dim lights.

SPECIAL NOTE: This position is funded through the Statewide Criminal Analysis Laboratory System Grant which provides ongoing, annual funding to the PBSO Crime Laboratory from criminal fines collected pursuant to ss. 938.07 and 938.055.


Minimum Monthly Salary: $6,635
Maximum Monthly Salary 10 step pay plan
Starting Salary is negotiable with experience
