Responsibilities

  • Approximately 70% of this position involves: processing crime scenes, including but not limited to homicides, sexual assaults, armed robberies, home invasions, and property crimes such as burglaries; packaging and transporting evidence, attending and photographing autopsies and processing such evidence for fingerprints, trace evidence and other physical or biological evidence.
  • The remaining time is spent preparing supplementary reports, testifying in court, receiving continuing education and maintaining equipment in a state of readiness. The incumbent must frequently interact, on a professional basis, with law enforcement officials at all levels, state and federal prosecutors, state laboratory personnel, medical examiners and pathologists in person or by telephone.
  • Works under the supervision of the Crime Lab Supervisor within the Detective Division of the Criminal Investigation Bureau.
  • Evaluates and physically secures crime scenes, using various types of equipment.
  • Identifies, collects and prepares physical evidence for scientific evaluation and comparison.
  • Establishes a permanent record describing the crime scene by writing detailed reports, preparing accurate sketches and diagrams, and by applying professional photographic techniques.
  • Gives testimony in criminal court cases regarding the results of analysis and examination of physical evidence.
  • Maintains forensic field and laboratory supplies for the department.
  • Transports evidence to and from laboratory.
  • Ensures that crime scene vehicles are properly maintained and contain adequate supplies for processing crime scene.
  • Responds to unpleasant sometimes gruesome environments such as the scene of a car crash, homicide or other assault that may involve a victim of any age.
  • Responds to indoor or outdoor scenes in any weather conditions at various times of day or night.
  • Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing, and with sensitivity. Interacts with people of various cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds.

Qualifications

IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION, YOU MUST INDICATE ON YOUR APPLICATION THAT AS OF THE CLOSING DATE YOU HAVE THE FOLLOWING:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Forensic Science, Forensic Technology, Criminalistics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Cell and Molecular Biology or Anthropology. Closely related fields may be considered by the discretion of the position supervisor.
  • Must possess a valid State Driver’s License with a good driving history.
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in Forensic Science, Forensic Technology, Criminalistics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Cell and Molecular Biology or Anthropology (or a closely related field as determined by the position supervisor).
  • Internship experience in a criminal justice or forensic agency or related field.
  • Professional forensic certifications such as: IAI –CSI (Crime Scene Investigator) or IAI-CSA (Crime Scene Analyst).

Compensation

SALARY: $33.38 ~ $41.04/hr
