The Hamilton County Coroner’s Laboratory has an immediate opening for one experienced, court qualified, firearms examiner. 

The laboratory is accredited under ISO 17025:2017 by ANAB as of June 2019.  The state-of-the-art, brand new, $55M laboratory serves approximately 43 police agencies in a region of about 1 million people including the city of Cincinnati. 

Job responsibilities include the normal microscopic comparison of firearms evidence, toolmark comparisons, distance determinations, serial number restorations, function tests, court testimony, and training law enforcement personnel. 

This position does NOT involve GSR (primer residues) analyses, footwear/tiretrack comparisons, or crime scene processing. 

Normal working hours are 8 to 4:30 Monday through Friday with no “On-call.” The examiner will join a staff of five other firearms examiners.  The examiner will be required to comply with safety, quality control, and other administrative criteria of the ANAB accreditation program. 


Examiners must be able to perform casework independently and be qualified to provide expert testimony in court.  Membership in AFTE is desirable.


The salary range for this position is $58,000 to $95,000, and dependent upon experience.
