Responsibilities

Forensic Scientist I - Breath Alcohol Laboratory
Performs (entry-level) training on laboratory tests, analyses, classifications, comparisons and identifications of all types of physical evidence from crime scenes with emphasis and specific recognized expertise in an option or specialty area identified above.  Training involves interpreting analytical and instrumental results, and preparing written opinion reports. Trains on testimony as an expert witness in court as to results of analyses.  Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Forensic Scientist II - Breath Alcohol Laboratory
Performs routine (journey-level) forensic science work. Work involves conducting laboratory tests, conducting analyses, and identifying all types of physical evidence from crime scenes with emphasis and specific recognized expertise in an option or specialty area identified above.  Work involves interpreting analytical and instrumental results; establishing and maintaining records; preparing technical reports; and testifying as an expert witness in court. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Forensic Scientist III - Breath Alcohol Laboratory
Performs moderately complex (journey-level) forensic science work. Work involves conducting laboratory analyses on database samples or physical evidence from crime scenes with emphasis and specific recognized expertise in an option or specialty area identified above. Work involves interpreting analytical and instrumental results; establishing and maintaining records; preparing technical reports; and testifying as an expert witness in court. Works under general supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Forensic Scientist IV-VI - Breath Alcohol Laboratory
Performs moderately complex (journey-level) forensic science work. Work involves conducting laboratory analyses on database samples or physical evidence from crime scenes with emphasis and specific recognized expertise in an option or specialty area identified above.  Work involves interpreting analytical and instrumental results; establishing and maintaining records; preparing technical reports; and testifying as an expert witness in court. Works under general supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Qualifications

Education – Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree  with a major in Chemistry, or with a major in another scientific field including a minimum of eighteen (18) hours in Chemistry, no more than eight (8) hours of which may be freshman level.

Forensic Scientist II - Breath Alcohol Laboratory
A minimum of one (1) year of work experience as a Breath Test Forensic Scientist I or the equivalent experience as a Technical Supervisor in another certified Texas Breath Alcohol Testing Program, or as per current Texas Breath Alcohol Testing Regulations requirements.

Forensic Scientist III - Breath Alcohol Laboratory 
A minimum of three (3) years’ of work experience as a Breath Test Forensic Scientist II (four [4] years’ total) or the equivalent experience as a Technical Supervisor in another certified Texas Breath Alcohol Testing Program or as per current Texas Breath Alcohol Testing Regulations requirements.

Forensic Scientist IV - Breath Alcohol Laboratory
A minimum of eight (8) years’ of work experience as a Breath Test Forensic Scientist or the equivalent experience as a Technical Supervisor in another certified Texas Breath Alcohol Testing Program or as per current Texas Breath Alcohol Testing Regulations requirements and successful completion of a promotional exam with oral board.

Forensic Scientist V - Breath Alcohol Laboratory
A minimum of sixteen (16) years’ of work experience as a Breath Test Forensic Scientist or the equivalent experience as a Technical Supervisor in another certified Texas Breath Alcohol Testing Program or as per current Texas Breath Alcohol Testing Regulations requirements and successful completion of the Forensic Scientist IV promotional exam with oral board.

Forensic Scientist VI - Breath Alcohol Laboratory
A minimum of twenty (20) years’ work experience as a Breath Test Forensic Scientist or the equivalent experience as a Technical Supervisor in another certified Texas Breath Alcohol Testing Program or as per current Texas Breath Alcohol Testing Regulations requirements and successful completion of the Forensic Scientist IV promotional exam with oral board.
