Toxicology Laboratory Manager

Responsibilities
- Responsible for overseeing and maintaining laboratory with ISO/IEC 17025:2017 and ABFT accreditation.
- Conducts regular quality control audits on processes, staff and procedures.
- Investigates non-compliance with quality control requirements and initiates corrective actions.
- Conducts annual evaluations of laboratory Standard Operating Procedures to ensure procedures are relevant and consistent with the laboratory mission.
- Develops and manages validation of new laboratory methods.
- Reviews proficiency tests.
- Prepares and issues written reports on proficiency tests detailing accuracy and efficiency of laboratory.
- Monitors routine daily tests on a random basis.
- Prepares statistical reports.
- May perform scientific analysis and testing on biological samples.
- May review and approve toxicology reports in the absence of the Chief Toxicologist.
- Interprets toxicology results.
- Provides personnel and laboratory operations oversight in the absence of the Chief Toxicologist.
- Performs related duties as required.
Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Pharmacology, Toxicology, Chemistry or related scientific field and 2 years of applicable laboratory experience; or a Master’s Degree in Pharmacology, Toxicology, Chemistry or related scientific field with 10 years of laboratory experience. PhD preferred.
- Must be certified by the American Board of Forensic Toxicology, Fellow or Diplomate in Forensic Toxicology, or become certified within two years. Fellow preferred.
- Thorough understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of Forensic Toxicology and ISO/IEC 17025:2017 and ABFT accreditation requirements.
- Comprehensive knowledge of principles, practices and terminology of analytical chemistry.
- Comprehensive knowledge of current developments in the field of Toxicology analysis and interpretation.
- Hands on laboratory experience in analysis of drugs in biological specimens and operating gas chromatography/liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry is required.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Demonstrated ability to work with frequent interruptions, ability to establish and maintain effective communications with fellow staff members and is detail oriented.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions and standard operating procedures; ability to maintain records; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and County employees.
- Must secure and maintain favorable background investigation from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Department .
- Must have available transportation during the entire workday.
- May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek.
