Funding Opportunities Through the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA)

Source: Mary Jo Giovacchini, Project Manager

Forensic science is a critical tool for solving crimes and is used to strengthen evidence-based criminal justice responses. The BJA provides federal funding through multiple forensic science programs to combat violent crime, resolve cases, lower recidivism, increase public safety, and enhance justice.

Every year, the BJA solicits federal grant funding applications to help state, local, and tribal justice agencies:

  • Solve cold cases.
  • Decrease backlogs in DNA analysis, including sexual assault kits.
  • Resolve cases involving unidentified human remains.
  • Increase the number of qualified medical examiners.
  • Use new DNA technology to investigate claims of innocence in post-conviction cases.
