The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office is seeking a skilled Forensic Death Investigator II to join a dynamic team that plays a critical role in public safety, accurate death certification, and the administration of justice across a four‑county region.

As a Forensic Death Investigator II, you will conduct intermediate‑level, field‑based investigations into sudden, unexpected, and unattended deaths. 

You will be entrusted with responsibilities such as: 

  • Leading or assisting with on‑scene investigations across diverse environments and conditions
  •  Determining jurisdiction and coordinating with law enforcement, fire/EMS, hospitals, and other agencies 
  • Conducting next‑of‑kin notifications, interviews, and information gathering 
  • Identifying decedents using scene findings, data systems, and forensic resources
  • Documenting scenes using photography, measurement, and evidence‑preservation techniques
  • Preparing clear, detailed case reports for Medical Examiner review 
  • Supporting courtroom testimony, inquests, and legal proceedings 
  • Interacting with tissue/organ procurement partners and funeral home professionals 
  • Operating emergency vehicles and responding to mass‑fatality or disaster events 
  • Training junior investigators and supporting supervisory staff when needed

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) 
  • Two (2) years full‑time medicolegal/forensic death investigation experience, including: scene investigation, evidence assessment, interviewing, documentation, reconstruction, and courtroom testimony 
  • Valid driver’s license 
  • Completion of an approved Medicolegal Death Investigation course within one (1) year of hire Ideal Candidates Bring 
  • Strong knowledge of investigative procedures, medical terminology, and legal standards 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • The physical ability and emotional steadiness to respond to scenes at all hours 
  • High professional integrity, attention to detail, and respect for decedents and families 
  • A collaborative mindset with the ability to work alongside law enforcement, pathologists, and other stakeholders

Work Schedule 

  • Must be able to work a minimum 40‑hour week, including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Compensation

Compensation: $29.98 - $32.98 per hour (target 2080 hours per year).
