Student Affiliate Eligibility Requirements

Who Can Apply?

To qualify for AAFS Student Affiliate status, you must meet the following criteria both at the time of application and when your application is being reviewed:

  • Be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program that supports a forensic science career as recognized by the AAFS section to which you're applying
  • Certify your eligibility annually with the AAFS

Choosing Your Section

When you apply for Student Affiliate membership, you'll join one of AAFS's 12 specialized sections based on your current academic focus and career interests:

Your section choice should align with your current studies and intended career path. Don't worry if your interests evolve — many students find that their academic focus shifts over time, and some forensic disciplines naturally overlap. It's common for members to transition to a different section as they advance from student to full membership, reflecting their actual career trajectory.

In addition to the general AAFS requirements above, each section has specific eligibility criteria that reflect the unique nature of that discipline. These section-specific requirements ensure that your academic program aligns with the professional standards of your chosen field.

Maintaining Your Student Status

Student Affiliate status may be maintained for two consecutive calendar years beginning at the end of the calendar year in which you graduate. This grace period allows you to complete your education and transition into the workforce without losing your AAFS connection.

Once you secure employment in a forensic discipline recognized by an AAFS section during this two-year period, you'll be required to upgrade your membership to Trainee Affiliate or Associate Member status — continuing your growth within the Academy as your career advances.
