Forensic Pathology Fellowship

Responsibilities

Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner (CCOCME), in conjunction with the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV, offers a one-year ACGME-accredited fellowship training program in forensic pathology. The office serves Clark County, Nevada, which includes Las Vegas and surrounding urban and rural areas, with a combined population of over 2.4 million people and an additional 45 million visitors each year. In 2024, there were 21,692 deaths in Clark County. CCOCME was contacted regarding 8,784 of these deaths, of which 5,988 deaths required a full investigation, and 3,755 deaths, including 198 child fatalities, required a forensic examination performed by a forensic pathologist. 

The fellow trains under the supervision and guidance of experienced board-certified forensic pathologists, participates in scene investigations, and is responsible for complete postmortem examinations (approximately 200–250), including thorough reports that effectively convey their findings and opinions. The fellow must have good communication skills to discuss cases with family members, law enforcement, and attorneys; participates in conferences with interested parties; assists in teaching rotating medical students and other medical trainees; and receives education in court testimony procedures. The fellow devotes six to ten weeks to laboratory experience (e.g., toxicology, anthropology/odontology, and crime laboratory) and gains proficiency in all ACGME competencies.

Qualifications

  • Valid Nevada class C driver’s license at the time of training
  • Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathic Medicine degree (MD/DO)
  • Valid license to practice medicine in the state of Nevada at the time of training
  • Successful completion of an ACGME accredited anatomic pathology residency
  • USMLE or COMLEX Transcript
  • Eligibility for certification in anatomic pathology (AP) or anatomic/clinical pathology (AP/CP) by the American Board of Pathology 

Citizenship: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Please note, Clark County does not provide H1B visa sponsorships or transfers for any employment positions.

Compensation

  • Salary will be based on graduate medical education year, commensurate with the level of postgraduate training in pathology
  • In addition to UNLV PYG based salary, the CCOCME is providing a stipend in the amount of $54,000 making the total salary range $100,000 to $120,000 based on program year
  • No state income tax in Nevada
