Andrew "Lamar" Miller of Huntsville, AL, formerly of Auburn, AL, passed away on July 5, 2021. He was 81 years old. He was born in Repton, AL, in 1939, the son of a high school football coach and an English teacher. The family eventually moved to Auburn, where Lamar grew up. As a child, Lamar contracted polio and underwent numerous surgeries, treatments, family separations, and other hardships as a result of that terrible disease, all of which he faced with courage and good humor. After graduating high school, Lamar joined the Auburn Police Department and was an Alabama State Trooper for several years before returning to school at Auburn University.

While at Auburn, Lamar began working for what became the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences. After graduating from Auburn with a degree in pharmacy, Lamar continued his career with the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in various laboratories across the state, including Enterprise, Auburn, and Birmingham. After specialized training at Georgetown University, Lamar became the forensic document examiner for the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, a position he held until his retirement. In this capacity, Lamar testified as an expert witness in courts across the state and, in his private practice, across the country. Lamar was a respected and renowned expert whose integrity and honesty were never questioned, even by the lawyers on opposing sides of his cases. He also spent countless hours as a trainer, advisor, and mentor to other document examiners.

Lamar was a Retired Fellow in the Questioned Documents Section of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, first becoming a member in 1977. In 1988, he became one of the Charter Members of the Southeastern Association of Forensic Document Examiners. Lamar was also a Life Member of the American Society of Questioned Document Examiners and was certified by the American Board of Forensic Document Examiners.

Lamar was preceded in death by his parents, Aubrey and Lois Miller; his beloved wife, Judy Miller; and his brother, Aubrey Miller. He is survived by his wife, Whitaker "Molly" Miller, of Huntsville, AL; sons, Andrew Lamar "Marty" Miller, Jr. (Amorette) and Patrick O'Neal Miller (Susan), both of the Huntsville, AL, area; his brother, William Selman Miller, of Athens, AL; his stepdaughter, Anna Bryant; and grandchildren Tyler, Ryan, Riley, Adeline, and O'Neal Miller. Plans for a memorial service in Auburn will be shared at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 (http://stjude.org/donate).
