Mardi Gras FAQ and Travel Advisory for AAFS 2026

Source: AAFS Meetings Department, AAFS 2026, New Orleans

Dates of Conference: February 9–14, 2026
Location: New Orleans, LA
Important Note: These dates coincide with "Deep Gras," the busiest week of the Mardi Gras season.

What is "Deep Gras" and why does it matter?

"Deep Gras" refers to the final stretch of Mardi Gras — the last few days before Fat Tuesday (February 17, 2026). It includes the largest parades, known as superkrewes (Endymion, Bacchus, Orpheus), and draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each day to the streets of New Orleans. During this period, the city is at maximum capacity, and many services operate under different conditions.

Will hotels be harder to book?

Yes. Hotels begin filling up months in advance, and prices surge due to high demand. AAFS attendees are strongly encouraged to:

What about transportation and street closures?

Expect major road closures and detours around the city every afternoon and evening. These closures impact:

  • Rideshare services (Uber/Lyft)
  • Shuttle routes
  • Streetcar lines

Walking may be the fastest way to get around certain parts of downtown during parade hours.

Pro tip: Download the parade schedule map or use an app like Waze (which accounts for closures) to plan your routes.

Will restaurants and venues be open?

Yes — but they will be very busy and may require:

  • Reservations made well in advance
  • Long wait times
  • Fixed-price menus during peak nights

We recommend attendees make group or individual dining reservations as early as possible.

Is it safe?

Mardi Gras is generally safe, but the crowds can be overwhelming, especially at night near large parades. Use common sense:

  • Stay in groups
  • Keep valuables secure
  • Avoid venturing into unknown neighborhoods after dark

Local police and emergency services will be very active but may be stretched thin due to parade demands.

Can I still enjoy Mardi Gras?

Absolutely! Many AAFS attendees may enjoy catching a parade or two — it's a truly unique cultural event. Plan ahead and allow extra time to navigate.

We encourage you to embrace the spirit of the city. If you're new to Mardi Gras, locals are often happy to help you understand what to expect.
