It is with mixed emotions that I share the news that Michael Peat, PhD, Fellow of the Toxicology Section, is stepping down as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Forensic Sciences (JFS), the official journal of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS) and a premier publication spanning the full breadth of forensic science disciplines. My emotions range from a little terror to profound gratitude, heartfelt congratulations, and best wishes for the next chapter of his life — and everything in between.

First, let's address the terror. How do you replace an icon? A leader in forensic science, a skilled editor, a trusted colleague, a dedicated professional, and someone who somehow manages to find more than 25 hours in every day? Dr. Peat's contributions to the Academy have been extraordinary, from service at the section level to serving as AAFS President and holding numerous other leadership positions. His commitment to JFS spans more than 35 years, beginning as a member of the Editorial Board, followed by his tenure as Editor from 2000 to 2017, and culminating in his role as Editor-in-Chief. At the 2026 AAFS Annual Scientific Conference in New Orleans, his exceptional service to the Academy was recognized with the Gradwohl Medal, the highest honor AAFS bestows on a member. His legacy will be a formidable one to follow.

Next comes gratitude. On behalf of the Academy, I want to extend my sincere thanks to Mike — and, of course, Brenda, because they have always been a team — for taking JFS to new heights. Under Dr. Peat's leadership, the journal's Impact Factor reached 1.9 in 2025, an all-time high representing a 5.5% increase. JFS also embraced Open Access (OA) publishing, expanding the reach and discoverability of published research while creating opportunities for increased visibility and revenue through the journal's profit-sharing model. As Editor-in-Chief, Mike also cultivated a strong, collaborative, and mutually beneficial relationship with Wiley, the journal's publisher. Through his leadership, he has positioned JFS for continued success.

The positive feedback I consistently receive from authors speaks volumes about the quality of the journal's editorial process. Having served on the JFS Editorial Board for many years, I can personally attest to the professionalism, care, and rigor with which manuscripts are evaluated and reviewed. Authors receive an exceptional level of service, and the average time from initial manuscript submission to publication has steadily decreased over the past decade. Throughout his tenure, Mike has consistently put the Academy first in the decisions he has made on behalf of JFS. He has also maintained an excellent working relationship with the AAFS Board of Directors and staff, strengthening the collaboration essential to the journal's success.

And finally, my very best wishes. Congratulations, Dr. Peat, on a job exceptionally well done and on a legacy that has helped take the Journal of Forensic Sciences to the next level. I know Mike and Brenda are ready to embrace retirement and reclaim some of those precious hours — this time for travel, without being tethered to laptops and cell phones. They have certainly earned that freedom and so much more! I look forward to seeing photos of a relaxed Mike Peat enjoying his travels and adventures.

On behalf of a grateful Academy, Mike, thank you for your decades of dedicated service, your extraordinary leadership, and your unwavering commitment to the mission of AAFS and JFS. You have accomplished a great deal, and you leave the journal in an excellent position for the future.

I began this announcement with a bit of Navy jargon, so it seems fitting to end it with a traditional parting wish: Dr. Michael Peat, fair winds and following seas!
