Student Affiliate and Trainee Affiliate Eligibility Requirements

Those with the temporary status of Student Affiliate or Trainee Affiliate must certify eligibility annually to keep their membership active.

Student Affiliates — If you are enrolled in a program relevant to forensic science, you are required to submit the annual Student Affiliate Eligibility Form, completed by your academic advisor. Masters and doctorate students in the Anthropology Section must be sponsored by a full Member or Fellow in the Anthropology Section.

Student Affiliates who are now employed in a forensic science discipline are required to submit an application for upgrade to Trainee Affiliate or Associate Member by October 1, 2022.

Student Affiliates who are no longer enrolled in an educational program or working in a forensic science discipline may apply for the Student Affiliate Waiver. Student Affiliate status may be maintained for two consecutive calendar years beginning at the end of the calendar year within which graduation occurs. During the two-year period, once employment in a recognized forensic discipline is achieved, Student Affiliates will be required to upgrade their membership to Trainee Affiliate or Associate Member. During time on the waiver, you will still be responsible for your Student Affiliate dues.

If you are graduating prior to the end of the 2023 calendar year, you must either apply for the waiver or provide your spring semester education information.

Trainee Affiliates — Please review the section requirements for Associate Member available at https://www.aafs.org/membership/membership-requirements/associate-member. If you meet the requirements as outlined by your section, you are required to submit an application for upgrade to Associate Member by October 1, 2022. If you do not meet the experience requirements, you are required to submit the annual Trainee Affiliate Eligibility Form, completed by your immediate supervisor.
