AAFS 2026
Community Connections Forum & Reception
The AAFS Community Connections Committee (CCC) invites you to a forum and reception at the annual conference in New Orleans. By fostering a welcoming and supportive culture, the CCC encourages diverse ideas that advance culturally competent education, research, and expertise in the legal system. Its mission is to build meaningful relationships and cultivate inclusive practices across the forensic sciences.

Join us for the CCC Forum & Reception featuring Dr. Shamika Kelley, the first Black Crime Laboratory Director in Louisiana. Dr. Kelley earned a BS in Biological Sciences from Louisiana State University, an MS in Forensic and Investigative Genetics from the University of North Texas Health Science Center, and a PhD in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University.
Dr. Kelley's career includes work as a forensic DNA analyst, supervisor, and consultant at the Houston Forensic Science Center, where she conducted DNA analyses, provided expert testimony in criminal cases, and led initiatives to reduce case backlogs. Her practitioner work has earned national recognition, including the Saltzman Award for Contributions to Practice from the American Society of Criminology Division on Women and Crime, honoring her impact on justice and safety for women.
Her research has been published in leading journals such as Journal of Interpersonal Violence, Feminist Criminology, Crime & Delinquency, and the Journal of Police and Criminal Psychology.
Conference attendees are encouraged to join this special event on Tuesday, February 10, from 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm. Don't miss the opportunity to connect, learn, and be inspired.
