Study on the thermal damage traces of common textile fibers after simulated transient...

Gas explosions often result in the loss of biological evidence. This is due to transient thermal exposure and extreme destructiveness. Such conditions pose significant challenges to the identification of suspects and the reconstruction of their behavior. Clothing fibers act as di...

Area of origin analysis for expirated patterns using HemoVision

Although bloodstain pattern analysis (BPA) can be performed on various types of patterns, there is a lack of research looking into whether the area of origin (AO) can be determined for expirated patterns. Expirated patterns are formed when blood is pushed out of an opening in the...

Illegal electric fencing acting as a death trap in a suspected homicide

Electrocution fatalities most commonly occur in domestic or occupational settings. When such deaths are found in remote outdoor locations, they often raise suspicion of homicide or deliberate body disposal. Deaths due to illegal electric fencing are rare and usually accidental, o...

Deep learning in image forgery: A systematic review for risk of bias (RoB)

Image forgery (IF) is a critical issue that can lead to the misinterpretation of visual information. Conventional strategies for IF detection are primarily manual feature‐based and therefore require further analysis. Artificial intelligence (AI) has shown a positive impact in the...

A forensic evaluation method of stable diffusion‐generated images using feature‐based...

With the increasing realism of artificial intelligence (AI)‐generated images from Stable Diffusion and similar models, forensic practitioners face significant challenges in image authenticity verification. This study proposes a feature‐based likelihood ratio model based on deep l...

Quantitative study on the discriminative value of fingerprint minutiae

Traditional fingerprint identification primarily relies on the number of matching minutiae between the questioned and reference prints, where identity is determined by whether the match count exceeds a fixed threshold. However, this "minimum matching pair threshold method&qu...

Eyes on the water: How local mariners can accurately detect a submerged human proxy in...

It has recently been demonstrated that modern recreational fish finders with high‐frequency (800 kHz) Sidescan transducers can detect submerged human bodies. This ubiquitous technology is widely used on the water and has the potential to be utilized for the rapid detection of sub...

Considerations for multivariate approaches to classify blow fly species based on cuticular...

Blow flies are early colonizers of human remains, allowing their developmental rates to be used to estimate postmortem interval (PMI). Accurate species identification is essential for PMI estimation, yet traditional methods can be subjective. Recently, the use of cuticular hydroc...

Automated particle analysis of D.B. Cooper's tie

Automated particle analysis (APA) using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy‐dispersive x‐ray spectrometry (EDS) is a well‐known method in forensics, especially as it is applied to gunshot residue analysis. Here we describe the analysis of particles lifted from D.B. Coop...
