In Memoriam—Daniel Joseph Ryan

Daniel (Dan) Joseph Ryan, JD, MBA, AAFS Retired Fellow and Founding Member of the Digital & Multimedia Sciences Section, passed away February 19, 2026. Dan's 50+ year professional career began in 1966 with the National Security Agency and included leadership roles in the defense, security, forensic, legal, and academic sectors. Over time, he worked in executive positions with the U.S. Department of Defense and the Central Intelligence Agency, as well as other government entities. An expert in cryptography, cyberlaw, cybersecurity, and information security, he held numerous academic positions, including a professorship at the National Defense University in Washington, DC. Dan was the recipient of the CIA's National Intelligence Medal of Achievement and DoD's Joint Meritorious Civilian Service Award.
